# Blackjack 12 vs 4: Should You Hit or Stand?

**Stand on a hard 12 against a dealer 4 in standard multi-deck blackjack.** This is the first dealer upcard where hard 12 crosses from a hit to a stand: you normally hit 12 against 2 or 3, stand against 4, 5, or 6, then hit again against 7 through Ace.

The play can feel passive. Twelve is a weak total, and standing means you cannot improve it. But against a dealer 4, taking another card creates enough immediate bust risk that letting the dealer complete a vulnerable hand has the better expected value.

This guide focuses on ordinary total-dependent basic strategy for common four- to eight-deck blackjack. Exact strategy can differ in specialized single-deck, composition-dependent, or card-counting situations, which we cover separately below.

That pattern is worth learning as a single rule: **hard 12 stands only against 4, 5, and 6** in the common multi-deck game.

## Why do you stand on 12 against a 4?

A hard 12 is a classic “stiff” hand: it is too low to be comfortable, but a hit can bust it. If you draw a 10, Jack, Queen, or King, you immediately go over 21.

In a simple infinite-deck approximation, ten-value cards make up 4 of the 13 ranks, so the rough one-card bust risk from hard 12 is 4/13, or about 30.8%. The exact probability in a real shoe changes with the cards already removed and with the composition of your 12, but the approximation explains why hitting is not free.

Standing has a cost too. A 12 cannot beat any completed dealer total from 17 through 21\. If you stand, you are essentially relying on the dealer to bust.

Against a 2 or 3, that reliance is not quite good enough, so standard basic strategy tells you to hit. Against a 4, the balance changes. The dealer is vulnerable enough that accepting your weak 12 and transferring the drawing risk to the dealer becomes the better play.

## Why dealer 4 is the boundary

Dealer upcards are not simply “weak” or “strong.” There is a gradient. In a six-deck S17 game, the dealer busts about 35.4% with a 2 showing, 37.4% with a 3, and 39.6% with a 4\. The probability continues upward to roughly 41.8% with a 5 and 42.3% with a 6.

Those percentages are not a replacement for basic strategy, but they help explain its shape. A dealer 4 is materially more vulnerable than a dealer 2 or 3\. That extra vulnerability is enough to move hard 12 from hit to stand.

## 12 vs 4 compared with 12 vs 3

This is one of the cleanest adjacent-card boundaries in blackjack:

Nothing about your hand changed. The difference is entirely the dealer's upcard. That is why “I always stand on 12 against a small card” is a bad shortcut. Two and 3 are hits; 4, 5, and 6 are stands.

It is also why learning boundaries is more efficient than memorizing every chart cell as an isolated fact. If you know that 4 is the start of the hard-12 standing range, you automatically know how to handle 12 vs 2 and 12 vs 3.

## Why hard 12 is different from 13 through 16

Hard 12 has more room to draw than the higher stiff totals. Only ten-value cards bust a 12 immediately. As your total rises, more ranks become dangerous:

That is why hard 13 through 16 generally stand against dealer 2 through 6, while hard 12 waits until dealer 4 before standing. The lower total has less immediate downside from taking another card.

## Make sure your “12” is really a hard-total decision

Not every hand totaling 12 should be played from the hard-12 row.

### 10-2, 9-3, 8-4, or 7-5

These are ordinary two-card hard 12s. In standard multi-deck basic strategy, stand against dealer 4.

### 6-6

A pair of sixes totals 12, but pair strategy comes first when splitting is available. In common four- to eight-deck blackjack, 6-6 against a dealer 4 is normally a split. ### A-A

Two aces can be valued as 12, but they are not an ordinary hard 12\. Basic strategy splits aces in conventional blackjack. Treating A-A as a hard-total hand throws away the value of creating two hands that each start with an Ace.

## Does H17 vs S17 change 12 vs 4?

For the standard multi-deck hard-12 decision, no. Hard 12 vs dealer 4 remains a stand whether the dealer hits soft 17 (H17) or stands on soft 17 (S17).

That does not make the soft-17 rule unimportant. H17 changes several other basic-strategy decisions and is less favorable to the player overall than an otherwise identical S17 game. Use a chart that matches the table rather than assuming every blackjack game has the same strategy.

## The important single-deck composition exception

Most players should memorize the standard answer—stand on hard 12 vs 4—and stop there. But 12 vs 4 is also a good example of why exact card composition can matter in a single-deck game.

Wizard of Odds' composition-dependent strategy for a freshly shuffled single-deck H17 game lists **10-2 vs dealer 4 as a hit**, an exception to the ordinary total-dependent instruction to stand on 12 vs 4.

Why can the exact cards matter? In one deck, removing a specific 10 and 2 changes the proportions of the remaining ranks more noticeably than it would in a six- or eight-deck shoe. Close expected-value decisions can therefore move when strategy accounts for the exact cards rather than only the total.

This is a specialized exception. Do not use it as a reason to hit every 12 vs 4\. If you are learning ordinary casino basic strategy—especially for a shoe game—the correct memory rule remains **stand**.

## What about card counting?

Card counting and basic strategy solve related but different problems. Basic strategy gives the best play for the assumed rules without using information from previously exposed cards. A counting system tracks changes in the remaining shoe and can attach validated index numbers to selected close decisions.

Hard 12 against weak dealer upcards is exactly the kind of marginal area where composition can matter. But a counting deviation is useful only if you are accurately keeping the count, converting it correctly when required, and using an index set designed for your system and game.

## Common mistakes with 12 vs 4

- **Hitting because 12 feels too low.** Your total is weak, but against dealer 4 the dealer's forced drawing risk makes standing better in standard multi-deck basic strategy.
- **Standing on 12 against every 2 through 6.** The correct standard boundary is narrower: hit against 2 and 3, stand against 4 through 6.
- **Playing 6-6 as an ordinary 12.** Check pair strategy first. Against dealer 4, 6-6 is generally split in the common multi-deck game.
- **Using dealer bust odds as a strategy chart.** Bust probability helps explain the decision, but expected value considers all dealer outcomes and all outcomes from your alternative actions.
- **Changing strategy because the last stand lost.** A dealer making 20 after you stand does not make the decision wrong. Basic strategy is about long-run expected value before the hidden cards are known.
- **Applying a niche single-deck exception everywhere.** Composition-dependent strategy is tied to exact cards and rules. It is not a universal replacement for total-dependent basic strategy.

## An easy way to remember hard 12

Use one compact phrase:

**“Twelve stands four through six.”**

That gives you the whole standard multi-deck row:

- Dealer 2–3: hit.
- Dealer 4–6: stand.
- Dealer 7–Ace: hit.

Then keep pairs separate. If the 12 is actually 6-6 or A-A, check the pair row before using this shortcut.
