# Soft hands in blackjack: why the Ace changes the play

A **soft hand** is any total that still counts an Ace as 11\. Ace-6 is soft 17\. Ace-7 is soft 18\. Draw a 10 on Ace-7 and it becomes hard 18 — the Ace is now a 1, and the next card can bust you.

That extra life is the whole reason the strategy chart has a separate soft block. You can hit totals that would be suicidal as hard hands, and you can double in spots where a hard total would merely stand.

## The famous one: Ace-7 (soft 18)

Hard 18 is almost always a stand. Soft 18 is not. Against a dealer 9, 10, or Ace, basic strategy hits (or, in some H17 games, the double/hit mix shifts). Standing on soft 18 against a 9 is one of the most common “but 18 is a good hand” leaks. The dealer’s 9 makes 19 often enough that taking a card with no bust risk is the better of two imperfect options.

Against 2–6 you are often doubling soft 18, especially in S17 games. You are not doubling because 18 is weak. You are pressing a hand that can improve while the dealer is in the bust zone. Exact cells depend on [H17 vs S17](https://learnblackjack.org/h17-vs-s17-blackjack/).

## Soft 13–17

These are drawing hands that still have an Ace as 11\. You hit against high upcards. You double against the dealer’s weakest cards when the chart says so — typically Ace-2 through Ace-6 against 4–6, with the 5 and 6 columns doing more work. Do not invent your own double set. The EV gaps are small and the chart already did the arithmetic.

## Soft 19 and 20

Soft 20 (Ace-9) is a stand except for a rare double against 6 in some rule sets. Soft 19 (Ace-8) is usually a stand; H17 games may add a double against 6\. These are the cells people over-think after they finally learn to hit soft 18\. Learn the exceptions from the chart, not from a story.

## How to practice them

Soft hands need their own drill block. If you mix them with hard totals from day one, your brain files Ace-7 next to 18 and you will stand against 9\. TwentyOne’s soft-total practice exists to break that filing error. Miss, read the reason, deal another Ace.
