Counting cards at a casino is legal in the United States, but it is harder than movies suggest, and the casino can still throw you out. The method itself is simple: you track the ratio of high to low cards left in the shoe, bet more when the remaining cards favor you, and bet the minimum when they don’t. The difficulty is everything around it: rules, shuffling machines, speed, and staff who are trained to look for you.

This guide covers what counting does in a real casino, what the law says, how counters get noticed, and how to get ready before you risk real money.

## TL;DR

- Counting in your head is not a crime in the US. Using a device to do it is a different matter in Nevada, and casinos can ban you for any reason that isn’t discrimination.
- The edge is small. Counting gives you a thin advantage on top of perfect basic strategy, and only if the game’s rules and shuffling allow it.
- Continuous shuffling machines, 6:5 payouts and no-mid-shoe-entry rules have wiped out many counting opportunities.
- Casinos watch bet spreads and insurance behavior, not just your face. Large swings in bet size are the usual giveaway.
- Most counters fail from errors, not detection. Practice basic strategy first, then the count, under real table conditions.

## What card counting actually does

Blackjack is unusual among casino games because the odds change as cards leave the shoe. Cards that have been dealt are gone, so what remains is different from a fresh deck. [Card counting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Card%5Fcounting?ref=learnblackjack.org) is a strategy for judging whether the player or the dealer has the advantage on the next hand, by keeping a running tally of high and low cards dealt.

A shoe rich in tens and aces helps the player. You get more blackjacks, which pay extra, and the dealer busts more often. A shoe rich in small cards helps the dealer. Counters bet little in the second case and much more in the first.

Note what counting is not. It does not predict the next card. It tells you when the odds shift slightly in your favor. You still lose many of those hands, which is why bankroll swings are large.

## How the most common system works

The most widely taught system is Hi-Lo. Every card gets a value:

| Cards | Hi-Lo value |
| -------------- | ----------- |
| 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 | +1 |
| 7, 8, 9 | 0 |
| 10, J, Q, K, A | −1 |

You start at zero and add as each card is revealed. A high running count means the shoe is rich in tens and aces. With multiple decks you convert the running count to a true count by dividing by the estimated number of decks left. We explain the full method, with practice sets, in our [Hi-Lo card counting guide](https://learnblackjack.org/hi-lo-card-counting-explained/).

The arithmetic is easy. Doing it while the dealer talks, other players chat, a cocktail server interrupts, and you also play perfect basic strategy is what takes months of practice.

## Basic strategy comes first

Counting only adds value if your play decisions are already correct. Every hit, stand, double and split mistake costs you more than the count earns. If you still wonder about a 16 against a 7 or when to double, you are not ready to count.

Build the foundation first:

- Learn the chart in our [basic strategy starter guide](https://learnblackjack.org/blackjack-basic-strategy/).
- Use [faster memorization methods](https://learnblackjack.org/how-to-memorize-blackjack-basic-strategy/) so the plays become automatic.
- Check the right chart for your table with the [interactive strategy chart](https://learnblackjack.org/strategy-chart/), which handles H17, S17 and double-after-split differences.
- Learn the tricky spots, such as [when to double down](https://learnblackjack.org/when-to-double-down-blackjack/), and whether to split [5s](https://learnblackjack.org/should-you-split-5s-blackjack/) or [6s](https://learnblackjack.org/should-you-split-6s-blackjack/).

Once you add counting, you also learn deviations from basic strategy at specific counts. Our [Illustrious 18 guide](https://learnblackjack.org/blackjack-card-counting-deviations/) covers the most valuable ones.

## Is counting cards at a casino legal?

In the United States, yes. According to [LegalClarity](https://legalclarity.org/why-card-counting-isnt-allowed-but-isnt-illegal/?ref=learnblackjack.org), no federal or state law criminalizes using your memory and mental math to track cards. Casinos are private businesses, though, and they can bar or remove players they suspect of counting.

Devices are the line you must not cross. [Nevada’s statute NRS 465.075](http://statutes.laws-info.com/nevada/title-41/chapter-465/unlawful-acts-and-equipment/465-075?ref=learnblackjack.org) makes it unlawful at a licensed gaming establishment to use, or possess with intent to use, a device to assist in calculating probabilities. A phone counting app at a live table falls into that territory. Practice on your phone at home, and keep it in your pocket at the casino.

For the details on bans, trespass and what happens if you are asked to leave, see our page on [whether card counting is illegal](https://learnblackjack.org/is-card-counting-illegal/).

## Why many casino games are no longer beatable

The blackjack Edward Thorp wrote about is not the game on most casino floors today. Several changes cut counters’ chances, as [LegalClarity](https://legalclarity.org/why-card-counting-isnt-allowed-but-isnt-illegal/?ref=learnblackjack.org) summarizes: 6:5 blackjack payouts, continuous shuffling machines, and shoes of six to eight decks.

### Continuous shuffling machines

A continuous shuffling machine (CSM) returns used cards to the shoe constantly. The composition of the remaining cards never drifts, so there is nothing to count. If a table has a CSM, walk away. A [Las Vegas Advisor excerpt](https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/samples/Casino-ologySample.pdf?ref=learnblackjack.org) describes how CSMs reset the deck and strip counting of its value.

### 6:5 payouts

A natural blackjack paying 6:5 instead of 3:2 raises the house edge considerably, and it hits counters hard because blackjacks are where much of their profit comes from. Read why in our [3:2 vs 6:5 breakdown](https://learnblackjack.org/3-2-vs-6-5-blackjack/). Counting a 6:5 game is generally a losing proposition.

### No mid-shoe entry

Some casinos stop you from sitting down partway through a shoe. The same [Las Vegas Advisor excerpt](https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/samples/Casino-ologySample.pdf?ref=learnblackjack.org) says executives adopted this rule to discourage counters who watch from behind the table, then jump in when the count is high. This is called wonging, and it is one of the lower-risk ways to count. Rules like this take it away.

### Rule variations that matter

Smaller rule differences, such as whether the dealer hits soft 17, whether you can double after splitting, and how many decks are used, shift the baseline edge too. We rank them in [which table rules matter most](https://learnblackjack.org/blackjack-rule-variations-house-edge/).

## How realistic is the edge?

Researchers describe counting as hard and modest in reward. A [Stanford CS231n paper on blackjack counting](https://cs231n.stanford.edu/2024/papers/blackjack-card-counting.pdf?ref=learnblackjack.org) notes that it requires mental tracking across multiple decks and only offers around a 1% edge over the casino. An [IEEE Potentials article](https://read.nxtbook.com/ieee/potentials/potentials%5Fjan%5Ffeb%5F2024/casinos%5Fcard%5Fcounters%5Fand%5Fthe.html?ref=learnblackjack.org) makes the related point that blackjack today is a different game from the one Thorp studied, and that your profit depends on the rules offered.

What a 1% edge means in practice: over a long run you win about a dollar for every hundred you wager, and short sessions are dominated by variance. You can count perfectly and still lose for an entire trip. Only play with money you can afford to lose.

This is why we are blunt with new players: counting is a skill to study, not a reliable income. If you want to understand the game and reduce the house edge, learning basic strategy gets you most of the way, and counting is the optional next step.

## How casinos spot counters

Casino staff are trained for this. A [Bill Zender and Associates](https://billzender.com/do-not-worry-about-the-masks-just-watch-the-table-play/?ref=learnblackjack.org) article for casino staff says that counting is the most common way to attack a face-up blackjack game, and tells surveillance to watch for specific patterns:

- **Wide bet spreads.** Ratios of 12:1 to 16:1 or more, for example from $25 to $400, with the increases tied to the count.
- **Insurance on weak hands.** The same source calls taking insurance on hands of 12 through 16 when the count is high the “million dollar indicator”, because it correlates with professional-level counting.
- **Shared databases and AI.** It adds that casinos increasingly use AI pattern recognition and shared databases of suspected advantage players across properties.

The Stanford paper above also describes casinos modeling player behavior against expected mathematical deviations to catch non-random betting. In plain terms: your bets are data, and a bet that rises exactly when the shoe turns good is a clear signal.

Our take on insurance is relevant here. For a non-counter it is almost always a losing bet, and for a counter it becomes correct only at high counts. See [whether insurance is ever worth taking](https://learnblackjack.org/blackjack-insurance-explained/) and the [insurance and even money rules](https://learnblackjack.org/blackjack-insurance-even-money/).

## What happens if you are caught

Usually, not much, and not what the movies show. Because counting is not a crime, the typical outcome is a conversation: the floor supervisor may shuffle early, cap your bets, tell you to play only certain games, or ask you to leave. In some cases the casino bans you from blackjack or from the property. Don’t argue, don’t lie about what you were doing, and don’t use a device.

If you want the legal details, read our page on [casino laws and bans](https://learnblackjack.org/is-card-counting-illegal/).

## A sensible plan before you sit down

1. **Master basic strategy** until you can play any hand without hesitation, at the rules of the casinos you actually visit.
2. **Learn Hi-Lo** and drill single cards, then pairs, then full rounds.
3. **Practice with distractions**: noise, talking, and dealing speed. Real tables are fast and crowded.
4. **Learn true count conversion** so you can handle shoes of six or eight decks.
5. **Pick the game before the seat.** Look for 3:2 blackjack, no CSM, and good penetration. Skip the table if it fails any of these.
6. **Set your bankroll and stop-loss** before you go. Treat any result as entertainment spending.
7. **Keep your play natural.** Erratic behavior draws attention faster than a good count does.

We lay out a structured version of steps 2 to 4 in [how to practice card counting at home](https://learnblackjack.org/how-to-practice-card-counting-at-home/).

## Our perspective

We build a training app, so we see where people struggle. Almost nobody fails at the idea of counting. They fail because basic strategy has gaps, because the count slips at speed, or because the table they chose could never be beaten. A player who counts at a 6:5 shoe with a shuffling machine is doing a lot of work for no edge.

So we push in a particular order. First get the decisions right and understand why they are right, because a chart you understand is a chart you remember under pressure. Then add the count, and practice it with the rules of the game you will actually play. The reason we built rule customization into the trainer is that H17 versus S17, deck count and payout all change what the right play is.

We also say plainly that the money is not the main reason to learn. Understanding the game lowers the house edge you face, and it makes you a calmer, more informed player. If counting turns out to be too much work, you have still gained something real.

## FAQ

### How do casinos know you’re counting cards?

Mostly through your betting. Surveillance and floor staff look for large bet spreads that track the count, plus unusual insurance decisions at high counts, as [Bill Zender and Associates](https://billzender.com/do-not-worry-about-the-masks-just-watch-the-table-play/?ref=learnblackjack.org) describes. Casinos also share information on suspected advantage players.

### Do you hit a 16 against a 7?

Under basic strategy, yes. A hard 16 against a dealer 7 is a hit, because the dealer’s hand is likely to be a made hand and standing loses more often. Some rule sets and high counts change borderline plays, so check the [strategy chart](https://learnblackjack.org/strategy-chart/) for your table.

### Is there a card counting app for blackjack?

Yes, for training. Apps like ours let you practice basic strategy and counting at home. Using a device to track cards at a live table is a different matter: [Nevada law](http://statutes.laws-info.com/nevada/title-41/chapter-465/unlawful-acts-and-equipment/465-075?ref=learnblackjack.org) makes that unlawful at licensed casinos, so leave it in your pocket.

### Can I count cards when playing with friends?

Yes, and it is a good place to practice. A home game has no shuffling machine, no surveillance and no ban risk. Friends may not enjoy it if you win money from them, so treat it as practice and keep stakes small.
