# Running Count vs True Count in Blackjack: Explained

**The running count is the raw Hi-Lo total you keep as cards are exposed. The true count adjusts that running count for the number of decks still left in the shoe.** In a balanced system such as Hi-Lo, the basic conversion is:

**True count = running count ÷ estimated decks remaining**

That adjustment matters because the same running count can mean very different things depending on how much of the shoe remains. A running count of +6 with six decks left is only about +1 per deck. The same +6 with two decks left is about +3 per deck.

The running count ends at **+2**.

A positive running count means more low-card tags than high-card tags have been removed from the shoe. In a balanced system, that implies the unseen cards are relatively richer in high cards than they were at the shuffle. A negative running count indicates the opposite tendency.

But the running count alone does not tell you how concentrated that imbalance is. For that, you need the true count.

## What is the true count?

The **true count** normalizes the running count by the approximate number of decks remaining. It expresses the count on a per-deck basis.

Consider three shoes that all have a running count of +6:

The running count never changed in those examples. What changed was its *density*.

You cannot reliably keep a true count without first maintaining an accurate running count. If the underlying total is wrong, dividing it more precisely only produces a more precise wrong answer.

## How to calculate the true count step by step

The arithmetic is simple. The challenge is doing it while the game continues.

### 1\. Keep the running count

Count every exposed card that your counting method calls for. With Hi-Lo, low cards add one, tens and Aces subtract one, and 7–9 do nothing.

### 2\. Estimate the decks remaining

Look at how much of the original shoe has already been dealt and estimate what remains. In a six-deck game, if about two decks have been used, roughly four decks remain.

### 3\. Divide the running count by decks remaining

If the running count is +8 and about four decks remain:

**+8 ÷ 4 = +2 true count**

If the running count is +8 and only two decks remain:

**+8 ÷ 2 = +4 true count**

Again, the identical running count produces a different signal because the amount of unseen material is different.

## Worked true-count examples

### Example 1: positive count early in a shoe

You are playing a six-deck shoe. About one deck has been dealt, leaving roughly five decks. The running count is +5.

**+5 ÷ 5 = +1**

The true count is about +1.

### Example 2: same running count later

Now imagine the running count is still +5, but only two decks remain.

**+5 ÷ 2 = +2.5**

The raw true count is +2.5\. How you convert that fractional result into an index number depends on the rounding convention used by the particular counting system, simulation, or index table you are following.

### Example 3: negative running count

Suppose the running count is −6 with three decks remaining.

**−6 ÷ 3 = −2**

The true count is −2.

Negative conversions deserve practice because shortcuts that feel intuitive with positive numbers can cause errors when signs change.

### Example 4: fractional deck estimate

You estimate 2.5 decks remaining and have a running count of +10.

**+10 ÷ 2.5 = +4**

Being comfortable with halves is useful because real shoes rarely line up neatly at exact whole-deck boundaries.

## How do you estimate decks remaining?

True-count arithmetic is usually easier than **deck estimation**. At a shoe game, you rarely get a display telling you that exactly 2.75 decks remain.

The practical skill is learning what a deck, half deck, and several decks look like as a stack of cards.

For a six-deck shoe:

- If roughly one deck has been dealt, about five remain.
- If roughly half the shoe has been dealt, about three remain.
- If roughly four decks have been dealt, about two remain.

The goal is not to stare at the cards until you can estimate to the millimeter. You want an estimate that is consistent enough for the counting method you are practicing.

A useful drill is to stack one deck of cards, then half a deck, then two decks. Look at the height from several angles. Later, deal random amounts into a discard pile and guess the number of decks before checking yourself.

## Do you round the true count up or down?

This is a place where oversimplified blackjack advice creates mistakes.

**There is no rounding rule you should copy blindly without knowing how your chosen index numbers were generated.** Different references may truncate, floor, round, or use other conventions, and negative numbers make those distinctions important.

For example, a raw result of +1.75 might be treated differently depending on the system or chart. Likewise, “round down” can mean something very different at −1.75 than it does at +1.75.

If you are using published playing indexes, use the same true-count conversion and rounding method assumed by that source. For early practice, it is often better to become accurate at the raw division first rather than memorizing a rounding shortcut without context.

## Why not just use the running count?

Imagine someone tells you a bucket contains six extra red balls. That fact is much more meaningful if the bucket holds 20 balls than if it holds 500.

The same logic applies to a balanced card count. A running count describes the net tags already observed. The amount of shoe remaining tells you how concentrated the resulting imbalance is.

That is why +6 early in a six-deck shoe should not be treated like +6 near the end of the shoe. The true count puts those situations on a more comparable scale.

### Converting too often

You do not need to perform division after every exposed card just to prove that you can. The running count is the number that must remain continuously accurate. True-count conversion is performed when it is useful for a decision.

### Forgetting that the divisor shrinks

A player may correctly maintain +6 for several rounds but keep mentally treating it as the same strength even as the shoe gets deeper. The whole point of the true count is to adjust for that changing denominator.

### Estimating decks dealt instead of decks remaining

If two decks have been dealt from a six-deck shoe, the divisor is approximately four decks remaining—not two decks dealt.

### Losing the sign on negative counts

−8 divided by four is −2, not +2\. Practice negative examples deliberately instead of only drilling positive counts.

### Trying to learn counting before basic strategy
