Look at the felt. Somewhere near the dealer it will say dealer hits soft 17 or dealer stands on all 17s. That is H17 versus S17. It is one of the highest-leverage rule swaps a player can actually observe without asking a pit boss for the binder.
Soft 17 is Ace-6. The Ace can still flex. If the dealer must hit that total, they will sometimes improve it — and sometimes bust. The extra hit is, on net, good for the house. H17 games carry a higher house edge than the same game with S17, usually a few tenths of a percent. That is not trivia. It is why downtown and Strip charts disagree in a handful of cells.
What actually changes for you
Most of basic strategy is identical. The cells that move are concentrated in:
- Some soft doubles (especially Ace-7 and Ace-8 against dealer 2–6).
- A few hard doubles.
- Surrender spots, if the table offers it — 15 or 16 against a 9, 10, or Ace is sensitive to how strong the dealer’s 17-up is.
You do not need to memorize a delta list if you train the correct chart. You do need to stop using an S17 poster at an H17 table and calling it “close enough.” Close enough is how extra edge leaks.
How to sit down correctly
- Read the table before the first hand. H17 or S17 is not hidden.
- Set that rule in your trainer. TwentyOne’s chart and drills both follow the toggle.
- If you play both kinds of games, keep them in separate practice blocks until the differences stop surprising you.
